In a nutshell, test & tag is a process of visually inspecting and electrically testing a portable appliance to ensure it meets Australian Standards.
The appliance is inspected for signs of undue wear, and that it's complete with no damage to its cord and plug.
Having passed inspection, it's tested with a Portable Appliance Tester (PAT) to ensure it's safe to use.
Once tested, a tag is applied showing it's been tested and when the next test is due.
The test is logged and the records retained for seven years.
Note: Most appliances that fail do so during the visual inspection and don't make it to the next step. Frayed cords, exposed wires, bent pins, missing insulation, burn marks and modifications can all lead to an item being failed and withdrawn from service.
Electrical safety requirements in NSW are set out in legislation. Both the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2025 require a Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) to ensure their electrical equipment is safe.
Clause 150 of the WHS Regulation requires electrical equipment to be regularly inspected and tested by a competent person where its use exposes it to conditions that may cause damage or reduced life. Most businesses meet this requirement by testing to the Australian Standard.
Frequency depends on the environment and the risks associated with the equipment, as set out in AS/NZS 3760 and AS/NZS 3012.
| Environment | Industry | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| High-Risk / Hostile | Construction, Demolition, Mining | 3 months |
| Industrial | Factories, Workshops, Warehouses | 6 months |
| Commercial | Offices, Schools, Retail | 12 months |
| Residential Commercial | Accommodation | 2 years |
| Low-Risk | Server Rooms | 5 years |

A test & tag compliance certificate is a formal document verifying that your workplace's portable electrical appliances and safety switches comply with AS/NZS 3760. You'll also receive a retrievable master register to satisfy WorkSafe or WHS inspectors, plus durable physical tags showing the test date, retest due date and tester's identifier on every passing item.
Book Your Test & TagMy aim isn't to undercut other businesses offering the same services, but to offer reasonable rates that align with industry standards.
Covers the first 10 single phase tests and tags — most small jobs are covered within the callout fee alone.
Pricing can vary with the complexity of the testing environment — an office where items need tracking down room to room takes longer than everything being brought to one spot. Get in touch for an accurate quote for your site.
PTSD crept up on me slowly. I didn't realise it, but those around me saw it. I'd lost interest in the things and activities I loved, become more irritable, less engaged. What happened to me was the overflow of years of exposure to trauma as both a police officer and as a soldier with the Australian Army.
In January 2023 my world came crashing down and I was diagnosed with Complex PTSD. What followed was intensive therapy, hospitalisations, weekly outpatient programs and medication. A successful 32-year career as a police officer had been pulled out from under me — I was told I could never work in that field again.
However, through determination and a lot of help from the people in my corner, here I am, taking steps to rebuild my purpose and identity.
By engaging Phoenix Test and Tag Blue Mountains to assist with your risk compliance, you're supporting me in my post-traumatic growth journey. What you'll get from me is a professional, service-driven operator with integrity, punctuality, cleanliness, and a commitment to do the right thing by you and your business.
Based in the Blue Mountains and servicing the surrounding region — I come to you, whether that's home, office or site.
